Music Therapy – A Unique Approach
That Supplements or Foregoes Traditional Approaches
by Rebecca Metcalf
Music-based therapy is an established and credentialed health profession that is starting to make waves as an alternative or supplement to drug-based therapy. Therapists use music to address and help overcome a variety of physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and speech issues. The American Music Therapy Association, for example, provides access to music therapy journals and publications. It hosts an annual conference, and provides information for professionals and students. This association collaborates with a number of national organizations including the centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities, and the Health Professions Network.
Music-based therapy interventions are both clinical and evidence-based. In other words, music isn’t randomly selected. Decisions are data driven and centered on individual needs. While some music therapy involves movement or singing, the focus of this article is music as meditation.
While the Michigan Music Therapists webpage offers a list of health care providers by county, it is not expansive. A current initiative of the music therapy field is continued research that aims to improve access to care providers. For many Michiganders, daily meditation at home with customized products created by Advanced Brain Technologies is a viable and cost effective option.
Products are available through certified providers and directly to consumers. Providers that offer The Listening Program from ABT are trained and certified to offer the program in their own practice and are a valuable resource for the client as they progress through their listening program. Consumers do have the ability to order listening products directly and use within the home setting, and can optionally connect with a certified provider for more professional assistance. In addition to being able to listen to music uniquely composed for The Listening Program, consumers have the option of purchasing the Waves multi-sensory bone-conduction audio system. Waves enhances the delivery of The Listening Program by using the two natural modes of hearing—through your ears (air conduction) and through your head (bone conduction)— offering a deeper, more immersive listening experience than conventional headphones can provide. Through this approach, the Waves system can accelerate and expand the benefits of the client's listening practice!
Advanced Brain Technologies is excited to offer their clients a new subscription-based online streaming option in addition to the iPod-based listening systems, to allow individuals and families access to The Listening Program at a very affordable monthly cost. Individual and family plans are available, and each listener can customize their listening program to their needs. Once registered for TLP Online, customers can listen through the free Android and iOS apps or through the web on their computer.
The Listening Program asks the participant to reset their brain via daily listening sessions, which lasts thirty minutes. Multitasking while listening is discouraged. Small children may color, do a puzzle or other activity that requires low brain activity. In other words, the program is not meant to be used during activities such as homework, driving or sports, where the mind needs to remain focused.
Advanced Brain Technologies Marketing Manager, Chris Austin, was proud to state that the Military is one of their largest growing group of consumers. Through their GSA contract and approval under the TRICARE ECHO program, active-duty military personnel and their families can be covered up to 100% of all costs for The Listening Program and other ABT services. Veterans can also access care through their VA benefits. "It's wonderful to be able to offer care to our military families with potentially no out-of-pocket expense," said Mr. Austin. "These families have sacrificed so much and we feel strongly that it is our duty to give something back to them. It's such a great feeling when you see our programs making a positive impact in their lives."
Music-based therapy gives aid to veterans suffering from PTSD, which has become a very big problem across the country. The practice of using music in therapy started after World War II. Hospitals hired musicians to calm veterans who were traumatized. Music can also help those suffering with sleep disorders. After regular listening, one’s brain becomes calmer and daily routines are easier to establish. Mr. Austin explained that their customized music, in conjunction with meditation, helps to “reset the brain”. This re-calibration of the brain is also beneficial to those with Traumatic Brain Injuries. Historically and today, music therapy helps veterans deal with physical, mental and emotional pain.
In addition to assisting veterans, Advanced Brain Technologies and The Listening Program is of great value to families. There is a wealth of research that supports the benefits of music-based therapy programs for children with autism. Communication is often a huge hurdle for those with autism. The Listening Program can improve this skill. Children with autism who receive music-based therapy also improve in behavior and social skills. It can make them more self-reliant and autonomous. In addition to social issues, those suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorders often have physical sensitivities to sound. Advanced Brain Technologies addresses this issue with the TLP Spectrum program. Music-based therapy creates a healthy relationship with sound by training the brain in order to improve sound brain fitness, reduce sensory sensitivities, and help people find comfort and safety in their environment.
As various forms of testing become prevalent in the education field, students need to utilize new tools to ensure peak performance. The Advanced Brain Technologies listening programs can help to motivate students and enhance their work. While certain programs such as TLP Spectrum are for a wide range of brain issues, others can be used to support auditory processing, communication, executive function, creative expression, personal development, increased energy, motivation and more. Programs can be customized to suit the needs of children as well as adults. No matter your age or your personal goals, there is a listening program from Advanced Brain Technologies that can help you.
Therapists and providers who use music in their practice work hard to be advocates for these methods as they grow in popularity. Advanced Brain Technologies provides state of the art equipment and training for Providers in a wide range of fields. From Occupational Therapists, Speech & Language Pathologists and Audiologists, to Educators, Counselors and Life Coaches, The Listening Program can be a highly beneficial addition to their individual practice. Whether you need to improve your math scores and social skills, have a child on the autism spectrum, or suffering from a Traumatic Brain Injury, music therapy through The Listening Program is definitely worth considering.
